September 28 is a day I will not soon forget. It was my very first day of being a full-time photographer and as luck would have it, I got to spend it photographing the birth of my cousins first born.
Flash back to a few weeks earlier. My cousin, Jessica, had called to tell me that the baby was now breech and they were probably going to have to do a c-section. While I know c-sections are fairly common, a lump formed in my throat and my mind started racing with all the emotions I thought she was going through with this unexpected news. Staying upbeat, I began asking her about being there for photos and kept telling her how excited I was that they asked me to be a part of it. The date for the c-section had been set and I made sure my entire day was cleared for the babies arrival!
Around 9:30am that morning I started receiving text messages and photos updating me on the progress. The plan was to go in for surgery around 11am or noon and I should be there around that time to get photos of the baby as soon as they brought him up to the nursery. So when they called around 10am to tell me I should get down to the hospital right away because I was going to “suit up” and go into the operating room with them, I could hardly stand it! I swear to you I had a grin the size of Texas on my face the entire way there!
The next few hours were some of the most memorable of my life. There I stood, in the corner of the hospital room as doctors and nurses came in to prep Jessica for surgery. Just being a witness to the entire experience was the most heart warming, touching and emotional thing I have witnessed. Just a few minutes before they wheeled her down for surgery, Ryan went to sit on the side of her bed and together they prayed. That was the moment all of the excitement, anxiety, worrying and waiting came to the surface as Jessica started to weep while Ryan asked God to watch over them and their baby. That moment still makes me cry when I think about it or see the photos.
At 11am they wheeled Jessica down to surgery and Ryan and I followed. As Ryan and I waited outside the OR for them to let us in, I was a little worried that one of us would be so nervous we would pass out. Once inside the room there was so much going on that you didn’t have time to really think and before we knew it little Logan was born at 11:53am. From that point on everything went so fast from the nurses all checking him out to wheeling him up to the nursery. Once in the nursery all the grandparents arrived. Watching them all peek through the nursery glass to get a glimpse at their new grandson was another moment that seems frozen in time. I keep remembering the look on my aunt’s face as she looked at her first grandchild for the first time.
Before I go into a full on crying fest, I had better stop writing and just show you the photos from the hospital. Thank you Jessica and Ryan for letting me be a part of your special day. It means the world to me.
JosetteBeautiful images Missy! Love them all. So thrilled you got to be in there and photograph such a special time!
